§ I — Origin Story

Two Memphises.

One craft.

The First Memphis

On the Nile.

The Egyptians told a story about Ptah — the craftsman god of Memphis. While other creation myths involved cosmic battles, his was quieter. He created the world by thinking it, then speaking it into being.

What existed first in his heart became real through his word. Vision, then form. Imagination, then made thing. Builders invoked his name before laying a foundation.

The Second Memphis
EST. 1819 · TENNESSEE

On the Mississippi.

Five thousand years later, a settlement on a bluff above the Mississippi took the name. The founders saw a great river, a fertile bend, a city that ought to be capital of something. They named it Memphis.

This Memphis built different monuments — Beale Street, Stax, Sun Studio, the bluff, a steel pyramid full of fishing tackle. It is, like the first one, a city that makes things.

We're from here.

Memphis is a city that makes things — barbecue, the blues, soul, civil rights, the airline that finally let everyone get a package overnight. It's a working town with a long memory and a stubborn streak.

We thought a craft technology studio belonged in a craft town. So far, so good.

A decade of shipping software for teams who would have rather been doing anything else than spec'ing it. Ptech is the studio I wished existed when I was on the buying side: small enough to actually care about your weird edge cases, technical enough to ship the thing.

Before Ptech: building AI tooling, web platforms, and the occasional internal CRM that nobody wanted to maintain. Now: in Memphis, on the bluff, building for clients who'd like something real.
